Kelor Island: the short steep hill that opens day 1

Updated 23 October 2026

Kelor Island is the first stop on day 1 of the 3-day sailing trip on Bombana 1 and Bombana 2, about an hour by boat from Labuan Bajo. It is a short, steep hill with a bay view, a climb of 15 to 30 minutes. It is not a dragon site.

A short climb, not a trek

Kelor is a small hilly islet, about an hour by boat from Labuan Bajo. A short climb leads to a viewpoint over the bay.

That is the whole stop. It is enough, and it is quick. A short climb, a good look, and back down to the boat.

The climb takes 15 to 30 minutes and is rated moderate. The hill is steep and the path is dry, so it feels harder than the clock suggests, especially for the first climb of the trip when your legs are cold. It isn't a long trek, and it isn't a dragon site either.

Below, the table sums up the level, the route day and the kit. Read it once. Then pack your shoes.

Shoes and water for the hill

Sturdy shoes help on the steep, dry path. Sandals will slide, and a pair of trainers with grip will not. Bring water, and a hat for the climb. That is all.

You don't need a head torch here, unlike Padar, because Kelor comes in daylight. You do need to know that the hill is steep before you start. If you have a bad knee, tell your guide at the jetty and take the slope at your own pace.

The hiking guide compares Kelor with the Padar and Komodo walks, so you can plan your legs for all three days, and know which climb asks the most.

Kelor on day 1

Day 1 runs pickup from the hotel or airport, the boat ride to Kelor Island, a snorkel at Manjarite, Kalong at sunset and dinner, with lunch on board. Kelor is the first of the three stops, and it is on the 2-day, 3-day and 4-day routes alike.

The only fixed time is the 10:00 meeting point on day 1. The 3-day route page has the full order. See Kalong for how the day ends.

Bombana 1 and Bombana 2 run this stop on every Monday & Friday sailing. Weather can move it, and the captain decides on the day.

FAQ

How steep is the hill on Kelor Island?

Steep but short. The climb takes 15 to 30 minutes, rated moderate, on a dry path where sturdy shoes help. It leads to a viewpoint over the bay. If you have a knee problem, tell your guide before you start.

Can I snorkel at Kelor on the sailing trip?

The day 1 snorkel is at Manjarite, the stop after Kelor, and Kelor itself is the climb. So pack your mask for the afternoon, and your shoes for the hill. Masks are provided on both Bombana 1 and Bombana 2.

How long is the boat ride from Labuan Bajo to Kelor?

About an hour. The only fixed time on day 1 is the 10:00 meeting point, and weather and the captain's decision can change the plan.

Is Kelor on the 2-day charter too?

Yes. Kelor opens day 1 on all three routes: the 2-day, 1-night charter, the 3-day, 2-night trip and the 4-day, 3-night charter. The 2-day charter is private only, while the 3-day trip also sails as an open trip on Monday & Friday.
